A 24-hour listener-supported non-commercial public radio station focusing on news and information programming. Established in 1950, the station holds the distinction of being the first library-owned radio station in the United States, founded years before the creation of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and National Public Radio. Originally airing a mix of school lessons and classical music, the station gradually evolved toward news and informational content. With a 21,000 watt signal covering parts of Kentucky and Indiana, the station serves as the primary National Public Radio member for its market. Through a partnership established in 1996 between the founding library and the University of Louisville, the station transitioned to a dedicated NPR news talk format, ceding most music programming to a sister station. The station broadcasts HD Radio signals as part of its multiplatform service.
