A clear-channel Class A AM radio station broadcasting at 640 kHz and owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. One of the oldest stations in the western United States, it began operations in 1922 and was among the first stations west of Chicago to broadcast at 50,000 watts of power. Studios and offices are located in Burbank, with the transmitter situated in La Mirada near Interstate 5. The daytime signal reaches throughout Southern California, covering San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Tijuana, while the nighttime signal extends across much of the western half of North America. The station carries a talk radio format featuring primarily locally produced programming. Morning drive time has been anchored by Bill Handel since 1993. The daily lineup also includes Gary Hoffmann and Shannon Farren in middays, John and Ken in the early afternoon, Tim Conway Jr. in late afternoons, and Mo' Kelly in the evenings. The overnight slot is filled by the nationally syndicated Coast to Coast AM with George Noory. Alongside KNX, the station serves as one of the two primary activation points for the Southern California Emergency Alert System, responsible for broadcasting hazardous weather alerts, disaster area declarations, and AMBER alerts. Both KTTV and KTLA television stations maintain live camera setups in the studios for broadcast segments. The station streams through iHeartRadio and is licensed by the FCC to broadcast in HD format, though its HD signal was reported to have been deactivated in August 2015.
