A freeform community radio station broadcasting on 1630 AM from the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Operating under the Federal Communications Commission's Part 15 rules, which govern very-low-power transmissions that do not require a broadcast license, the station also streams online through its website. It produces over 200 shows per month across two programming channels. KCHUNG Radio was founded by Solomon Bothwell in 2011, with its first broadcast occurring in March of that year. From its origins, the station cultivated a reputation for hosting artists, musicians, poets, and programming outside the scope of mainstream or licensed commercial radio. While the station now maintains a stable location in Chinatown, it continues a tradition of nomadic broadcasting, having transmitted from venues across Los Angeles including the Hammer Museum, LACMA, The Smell, MOCA, and the LA Anarchist Bookfair. In 2014, KCHUNG participated in the UCLA Hammer Museum's Made in L.A. exhibition, during which it created a subsidiary television network, KCHUNG TV, producing a fifteen-week series of livestreamed video programs shot inside the museum. In 2016, the station received a Creative Capital Emerging Field Award for its project News Body. Notable programming has included a music and basketball show, a science program, a community news and local music mix, and a range of shows hosted by figures from the Los Angeles arts community, including Laura Owens and Brendan Fowler.
