The station carries a classic rock format and serves the Covington and Clifton Forge communities in the Alleghany Highlands region of western Virginia. Studios and offices are situated on Oak Street in Covington, while its transmitter is located off Valley Ridge Road, within the boundaries of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The station traces its origins to an FCC auction held in April 2012, during which United States CP, LLC was announced as the highest bidder for the 101.9 MHz frequency as part of Auction 93. A construction permit was filed in September 2012, and the call sign WJVR was assigned on October 9, 2012 — a designation chosen as a tribute to the Jackson River, which flows through both Covington and Clifton Forge. The station launched on October 12, 2012, and received its full FCC license the following month. Ownership transferred in 2014 when United States CP, LLC sold the station to Todd P. Robinson, Inc. for $30,000. The sale was finalized on July 31, 2014, with the station operating under the WVJT, LLC licensee. Online streaming of broadcasts began on April 4, 2014, ahead of the ownership transfer's completion. In addition to its music programming, the station carries Alleghany High School sports. WJVR also broadcasts HD2 and HD3 subchannels via translator facilities.
