A secondary digital subchannel of WUKY, the listener-supported public radio station owned by the University of Kentucky and broadcasting on 91.3 MHz FM in Lexington, Kentucky. WUKY operates at 100,000 watts effective radiated power — the maximum permitted for most FM stations in the United States — from studios near the intersection of Greendale Road and Spurr Road in northwestern Lexington, housed in the former Saint Claire Recording Company Studio. The parent station, WUKY, carries an Adult Album Alternative format with more than 100 hours of music programming per week, supplemented by news and information content from National Public Radio, Public Radio International, American Public Media, and the BBC. Funding comes from listener memberships, periodic on-air fundraisers, University of Kentucky support, and grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. WUKY's history stretches back to the late 1930s, when the University of Kentucky operated an experimental Apex-band AM station known as WBKY. The station preceded the establishment of the FM band as a commercial and public broadcast medium, reflecting the university's long institutional involvement in radio. Programming on the HD-2 subchannel provides listeners with additional content options beyond the main 91.3 FM signal.
