Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) is a statewide public radio network licensed to the University of Wyoming and headquartered on the university campus in Laramie. Founded in 1966, the network traces its origins to KFBU, Wyoming's first radio station, which went on air October 3, 1922 with just 10 watts of power, operated by engineering student Warner N. Crosby from St. Matthew's Cathedral. Although licensed to the university, WPR does not produce student programming. Its output centers on local news and music, with a format spanning jazz, classical, and adult album alternative. The network distributes content from National Public Radio, Public Radio Exchange, Native Voice One, and American Public Media, carrying flagship programs such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and BBC World Service programming. WPR also operates Classical Wyoming, a dedicated 24-hour classical music service available on analog frequencies in Laramie, Rock Springs, and Lander, as well as statewide on HD-2. It is the only public radio network produced within Wyoming, though other services including Yellowstone Public Radio, KUER-FM, KUNC, and KUVO reach portions of the state. Funding comes primarily from twice-yearly pledge drives held each fall and spring. Coverage extends across Wyoming, with the network providing a consistent source of public affairs journalism and cultural programming for a geographically large, sparsely populated state.
