Broadcasting on 94.7 MHz with an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts, this commercial FM station operates from studios on Bishop Street in Downtown Honolulu, with its transmitter situated at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki. It is owned by Pacific Radio Group, Inc. and airs a rhythmic adult contemporary format branded as "The Rhythm of Hawaii," reaching listeners across the entire state through both its over-the-air signal and cable distribution. The station first signed on June 30, 1967, as KFOA-FM, becoming the third FM outlet in Honolulu. It was originally operated by the Royal Hawaiian Radio Company at 30,000 watts. Ownership transferred to the John Hutton Corporation in 1971, and the station adopted its current call sign alongside an AM simulcast partner, programming a beautiful music format that remained popular for decades. By the 1990s, the easy listening format began losing advertising appeal, and the station gradually added more vocals while scaling back instrumental programming. Pacific West Broadcasting acquired the AM-FM pair in 1997 for $2.8 million, and KUMU-FM shifted to soft adult contemporary. Around 2010, the station pivoted toward rhythmic adult contemporary, adopting the "Hawaii's Old Skool" identity before settling on its current branding in 2014. A nightly Quiet Storm program was added, featuring local on-air talent and replacing a previously syndicated show. The station consistently ranks among the top performers in the Honolulu ratings market and also transmits on Oceanic Time Warner Cable digital channel 870, extending its reach statewide. Programming highlights include weekday morning and afternoon shows, a weekend block, and regular local music content.
