The call letters stand for "Lake Fred Radio," named after a lake on the Stockton University campus—Lake Fred itself derived its name from Frederic "Eric" Sommer, who named it in 1973. The station began broadcasting on October 16, 1984, shortly after receiving its FCC license on October 3 of that year. WLFR's programming is intentionally eclectic, spanning rock, country, alternative, jazz, and other genres, with a stated commitment to offering content not found on commercial stations.
