Operating at 91.7 FM, this college radio station is owned by Stockton University and licensed to the Pomona section of Galloway Township, New Jersey, serving the Atlantic City area. The call letters stand for "Lake Fred Radio," named after a lake on the Stockton University campus—Lake Fred itself derived its name from Frederic "Eric" Sommer, who named it in 1973. The station began broadcasting on October 16, 1984, shortly after receiving its FCC license on October 3 of that year. WLFR's programming is intentionally eclectic, spanning rock, country, alternative, jazz, and other genres, with a stated commitment to offering content not found on commercial stations. The station is part of Stockton's School of Arts and Humanities and is managed by a combination of student and community managers under a General Manager. Its roots trace back to a predecessor carrier-current station called WSSR (Stockton State Radio), which began in the mid-1970s in a renovated cabin on campus and transmitted via dedicated phone lines and AM transmitters to dormitory buildings.
