A National Public Radio member station operating at 90.1 FM with 100,000 watts of effective radiated power, the maximum for most FM stations. Licensed to Fort Myers, it is owned by Florida Gulf Coast University and maintains studios on the FGCU campus. The station also operates WMKO 91.7, a full-time simulcast licensed to Marco Island that serves the Naples area. The station signed on September 12, 1983, under the original call sign WSFP-FM, built alongside PBS affiliate WSFP-TV Channel 30 under ownership of the University of South Florida. The call sign changed to WGCU-FM following transfer to Florida Gulf Coast University. The transmitter is located on Babcock Ranch Road in Punta Gorda within the Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area. Weekday programming follows an all-news and information format featuring NPR staples including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, 1A, Here and Now, and Marketplace. The station also produces a locally originated half-hour weekday program featuring regional news and interviews; Gulf Coast Life, hosted by Mike Kiniry, airs at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. The BBC World Service broadcasts overnight. Weekend programming broadens to include This American Life, Radiolab, The Moth Radio Hour, Science Friday, Snap Judgment, Latino USA, and other public radio offerings. An HD2 subchannel carries classical music from Classical 24, a network from American Public Media. The station serves a subscriber base of over 30,000 local members.
