A National Public Radio member station licensed to Lane Community College, the outlet began broadcasting in 1967, becoming the first locally focused noncommercial station in its market. The station was originally assigned the call sign KPNW before transitioning to KLCC on August 7, 1967. In 1971, it became a charter member of National Public Radio, among the first cohort of stations to carry NPR programming, including the inaugural broadcasts of All Things Considered. The station operates a network of repeater frequencies extending its signal across Western, Southern, and Central Oregon, addressing coverage gaps created by the region's mountainous terrain. KLCC has earned recognition for its news department, which produces content focused on Oregon politics, environment, rural issues, and local community affairs. Weekday news and information programming begins at 4 a.m. with NPR's Morning Edition and continues throughout the day with programs including Here and Now, The Takeaway, OPB's Think Out Loud, Fresh Air, PRI's The World, and All Things Considered. Long-form narrative programming airs in the evenings, featuring shows such as Reveal, Radiolab, This American Life, and Throughline. Evening music programming spans jazz, folk, Americana, blues, Celtic, and world music genres seven days a week. Saturday night features Dead Air, a program dedicated to the Grateful Dead reflecting the area's strong historical connection to the band. In 2019, the station launched the Northwest Passage Podcast to provide weekly news summaries and behind-the-scenes access to the newsroom.
