A non-commercial public radio station licensed to East Lansing, Michigan, WKAR-FM broadcasts at 90.5 MHz and is owned by Michigan State University along with sister stations WKAR 870 AM and WKAR-TV channel 23. Studios are located in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building on the MSU campus, and the transmitter tower is off Dobie Road in Okemos. The station carries an effective radiated power of 85,000 watts, a grandfathered designation as a Superpower FM station, enabling it to reach as far east as Flint and the Detroit suburbs and as far west as Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. WKAR-FM serves as the primary Emergency Alert System station for the entire state of Michigan, relaying emergency messages from the Michigan State Police to all media outlets statewide and hosting statewide EAS tests twice annually. Programming on weekdays features classical music during middays and evenings, with NPR news and talk content at other dayparts, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Fresh Air. Weekends bring classical music, folk music in the evenings, and NPR weekend fare including This American Life, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, and Hidden Brain. Overnight, the station carries Classical 24. Michigan news updates and NPR News air at the top of most hours. The station signed on October 4, 1948, making it one of the older FM public stations in the Midwest.
