A non-commercial educational radio station located in Dudley, Massachusetts, licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to WXRB-FM Educational Broadcasting, Inc., a non-profit organization. Its studios and transmitting facilities are based on the campus of Nichols College. The station originated as WNRC when operated by the college, and after a stronger signal at 97.5 MHz signed on in February 2005 under that callsign, Nichols College sold the original 95.1 frequency to Peter Q. George, the station's engineer, who had been programming the frequency following the swap. The current name pays tribute to XERB, the 50,000-watt Mexican border blaster known as "The Mighty 1090," from which disc jockey Wolfman Jack broadcast during the mid-1960s and early 1970s. The station has been described as one of the first non-commercial all-oldies radio stations in North America, operating a 24/7 automated format in stereo that focuses on recordings from 1954 to 1979. The format is modeled on the "R-KO-matic" automated music presentation used at WRKO-FM and WROR in Boston. The station transmits in stereo with RBDS encoding and occasionally carries sports programming produced by students at WNRC-LP, featuring Nichols College Bison athletics. Two annual programming traditions have become defining features: the broadcast of Orson Welles and The Mercury Theatre on the Air's original 1938 production of The War of the Worlds each Halloween night, and the airing of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" twice on Thanksgiving Day.
