KBPI (107.9 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Fort Collins, Colorado, owned by iHeartMedia and broadcasting an active rock format. Studios are located in the Denver Tech Center. In December 2017, iHeartMedia created a trimulcast along the Interstate 25 corridor by shifting KBPI's main signal to 107.9 in Fort Collins, adding a Denver translator on the same frequency, and converting KDZA in Pueblo/Colorado Springs to a simulcast of KBPI. The station launched on June 21, 1965 at 105.9 MHz in Denver, with studios on the 20th floor of the Daniels and Fisher Tower. Its founder and general manager was Bill Pierson, who named the station after his company, Bill Pierson Incorporated. It began with a progressive rock format and was sold in 1974 to Progressive Broadcasters, Incorporated, which maintained the rock orientation. Through the 1970s and 1980s, KBPI moved to an album-oriented rock sound and became known by the tagline "KBPI Rocks the Rockies," a phrase that spread to other rock stations across the United States and Canada. The station generated press during the 1970s for its live, on-air destruction of disco records, a gesture common among AOR stations aligned with the anti-disco movement, typically set to Black Sabbath recordings. The morning show hosted by Steven B. and the Hawk held top FM ratings in Denver for four years during this era. The station moved from 105.9 to its current 107.9 frequency during its development, transitioning through ownership changes before landing with iHeartMedia.
