A non-commercial public radio station licensed to Dallas, Texas, operating as a member of National Public Radio (NPR) and owned by North Texas Public Broadcasting. Classified as a Class C0 facility, it broadcasts at an effective radiated power of 30,000 watts from a transmitter on Plateau Drive in Cedar Hill, with studios on Harry Hines Boulevard in Dallas. Reach extends into surrounding North Texas markets through FM translators serving Tyler (100.1), Wichita Falls (88.3), and the Sherman/Denison area (99.3). The station signed on July 11, 1974, having been applied for under the call sign KZAG before adopting its current designation. In its early years it offered classical music alongside news and discussion programming before becoming an NPR member station. The music schedule was scaled back through the 1990s, and in 2000 the station transitioned fully to an all-news-and-information format. A significant expansion of the news department in 2014 increased the volume of original local reporting, and in subsequent years hundreds of KERA stories have been broadcast nationally and internationally by NPR, PRI, and the BBC. North Texas Public Broadcasting traces its origins to 1960, when the Dallas Independent School District joined with the Area Educational Television Foundation to launch public television station KERA-TV on channel 13, a frequency set aside by the FCC for non-commercial broadcasting in Dallas.
