An educational non-profit broadcaster owned and operated by Kennedy–King College, part of the City Colleges of Chicago system. The station serves the South Side of the city, with studios and transmitter located on the college's Englewood neighborhood campus. Its primary purpose is hands-on training for students pursuing careers in broadcasting and communications, with student-hosted programs airing during daytime hours. The station transmits in HD Radio, offering two distinct subchannels: the primary HD1 signal carries an urban adult contemporary format drawing from urban, rhythmic, and urban adult contemporary charts, while HD2 broadcasts classic hip hop. Programming emphasizes music that is non-offensive to its audience, a policy the station maintained formally during daytime hours since its early years. WKKC received its construction permit in August 1975, more than a year after its original 1974 application, which faced objections from Northwestern University over potential interference with co-channel WNUR in Evanston.
