A Christian talk radio station licensed to Newport News, Virginia, and serving the Hampton Roads region. The station operates on 1270 AM and is branded as The Lighthouse. Its programming is also carried by FM translator stations at 100.1 MHz in Norfolk, 96.9 MHz in Suffolk, and additional frequencies in the area. The station is owned and operated by Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting Corporation. The station traces its origins to a construction permit granted in April 1947 to the Eastern Broadcasting Corporation for a new daytime station on 1270 kHz, which signed on as WHYU on September 27, 1947. Eastern sold the station within a year for $60,000, citing the difficulty of managing it from their base in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In 1951 a studio was opened in Hilton Village, with primary studios located at 114 24th Street in a former annex of the Hotel Warwick. In the early 1950s, the ownership applied for UHF television channel 33 in Newport News, and WACH-TV signed on October 13, 1953. The radio station temporarily assumed the WACH call sign during a period when the television station suspended operations. Financial difficulties led to the radio station suspending operations on February 1, 1956, and a bankruptcy receiver was appointed. The assets were subsequently acquired by the United Broadcasting Company of Eastern Virginia, owned by Richard Eaton, for $54,500 in 1956, and the station returned to air under the call sign WYOU. The station has since evolved through multiple ownerships and formats before reaching its current configuration as a Christian talk outlet.
