WPGU FM 107.1

WPGU FM 107.1 broadcasts on 107.1 FM from Champaign IL and streams through its official website. The English-language, student-run college radio station describes itself as Champaign’s student-run alternative radio station. WPGU began in 1953 as an experimental carrier-current AM station created by University of Illinois engineering students. It joined the Illini Publishing Company in 1964, began FM broadcasting in 1967, added stereo broadcasting in 1972, and moved to 24-hour broadcasting in 1973. The WPGU name comes from the “Parade Ground Units,” where the station was originally located. Its 3,000-watt signal reaches Champaign County and parts of Douglas, Ford, McLean, Piatt, and Vermillion Counties.
