A community access radio station with studios in Carbondale, Colorado, licensed to and operated by Carbondale Community Access Radio, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its main transmitter broadcasts at 88.1 MHz from Sunlight Mountain near Glenwood Springs, with additional low-powered translators extending coverage across western Colorado from the Crystal Valley to Leadville. The station serves multiple communities throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, including Carbondale, Aspen, and Glenwood Springs. The station originated from an initiative by Lee Swidler, who placed newspaper advertisements seeking volunteers to establish a community radio service. Early organizers, including Bruce Stolbach, Bill Phillips, Brian Vancil, Jim Groh, and others, met in Swidler's locksmith shop to develop their plans. Funding came from a National Telecommunications and Information Administration grant combined with pledges from area residents. The station first broadcast on April 15, 1983. Operationally, the station relies on a small paid staff supported by approximately 100 volunteer program hosts, with governance provided by a board of directors elected by the membership. Its programming model blends music with locally produced journalism, covering issues relevant to western Colorado communities. Editorial content has addressed topics including regional public health developments, agricultural policy on the Western Slope, wildlife management, natural resource incidents, and early childhood services. The station is a member of the national community radio ecosystem and holds FCC Facility ID 88445.
