A non-commercial free-form FM radio station licensed to Blacksburg, Virginia, serving Montgomery County. The station is licensed to Virginia Tech and operated by The Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech, with studios located in Squires Student Center and a transmitter sited on Price Mountain. The station's history extends to March 1948, when it began as an experimental AM radio operation after a student built a transmitter in a campus dormitory room, making it one of the longest-running non-commercial radio stations in Virginia. It transitioned to FM broadcasting on September 23, 1969, signing on at 90.7 MHz. WUVT is known for its eclectic, student-curated programming that covers a wide spectrum of musical styles across multiple eras. DJs, typically drawn from the student body and alumni, select content based on personal taste rather than commercial formatting, resulting in programming that includes genres rarely heard on commercial radio. The station has a long tradition of serving the campus and surrounding community through distinctive, non-mainstream programming. The station received significant attention following the April 16, 2007 Virginia Tech tragedy, when Chief Engineer Kevin Sterne was among those injured. In response, Clear Channel and the Society of Broadcast Engineers donated a Harris Z5CD solid-state transmitter, a transmitter building, and antenna equipment, restoring WUVT to full broadcast power by April 28, 2007.
