A commercial radio station broadcasting at 96.5 FM in Birmingham, Alabama, owned by San Antonio-based iHeartMedia and formatted as an adult contemporary station under the brand name "Magic 96.5." Studios are located in the Beacon Ridge Tower on First Avenue South in Birmingham. The station operates with an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts, the maximum permitted for most FM stations in the United States, with its transmitter positioned atop the western end of the Red Mountain range off Venice Road. The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology; its HD3 subchannel carries a Christian adult contemporary format branded as K-Love, which also feeds FM translator 96.1 W241AI in Gorgas. The station signed on June 1, 1961 as WCRT-FM with 49,000 watts, operating as a sister station to WCRT 1260 AM under Chapman Radio & Television Company ownership, with the two stations initially simulcasting identical programming. In 1973 it was sold to Magic City Broadcasting, rebranded as WQEZ, and moved to a taller antenna at 50,000 watts, adopting a beautiful music format of instrumental and soft vocal programming. Power was increased to 100,000 watts in the late 1970s. In 1982, Capitol Broadcasting acquired the station and shifted the format to adult contemporary, beginning the "Magic" branding that continues in the present day. Subsequent ownership passed through several groups before iHeartMedia assumed control.
