A non-commercial public radio station licensed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and owned by Public Radio, Inc. The station is a member of National Public Radio and carries a news-oriented weekday lineup. Studios are located on Valley Creek Drive on the southeast side of the city, while the transmitter sits on River Road near the Mississippi River. The station broadcasts using HD Radio technology and airs classical music from Classical 24 on its HD-2 digital subchannel. The station signed on January 18, 1980, initially operating as a community-based public radio outlet with a diverse schedule that included classical, jazz, folk, blues, big band, and adult standards programming alongside NPR news content. Original studios were housed in a temporary building at the transmitter site on Frenchtown Road. The station relocated to its Valley Creek Drive facilities in 1986, and by the 1990s had largely transitioned to a news and information format, phasing out most music programming. Local productions include Talk Louisiana with Jim Engster, an interview and call-in program, and Louisiana Things Considered, a daily half-hour news magazine shared with WWNO in New Orleans. Weekend evenings feature music programming including American Routes, Center Stage, and a Cajun and Americana music show called Hootenany Power. Overnight hours carry the BBC World Service. The station also produces several notable podcast series including Sea Change, Road to Rickwood, and What Was Lost.
