During hazardous conditions the cycle is condensed to prioritize short-term forecasts, hazardous weather outlooks, special weather statements, and tropical weather summaries. Beyond meteorological content, the network also carries national security notifications, natural disaster bulletins, environmental advisories, public safety announcements such as Amber Alerts, civil emergency alerts, evacuation orders, and other hazard information drawn from the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System. Automated broadcast technology allows segments to be recycled across multiple transmission cycles while ensuring regular updating at each transmitter site. The broader network traces its origins to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began marine weather broadcasts experimentally in Chicago and New York City; the service expanded to serve the general public in coastal regions through the 1960s and early 1970s before growing into the comprehensive nationwide system in operation today.
