KUT is a listener and community supported public radio station broadcasting on 90.5 FM, owned and operated by the University of Texas at Austin. It serves as the National Public Radio member station for central Texas, with studio operations located at the Dealey Center for New Media on the UT Austin campus. The main transmitter broadcasts at an effective radiated power of 24,500 watts from a site eight miles west of downtown Austin at the University of Texas Bee Cave Research Center, and the station is licensed for digital hybrid HD broadcasting. KUT is one of three radio outlets based on the UT campus, alongside student-run KVRX 91.7 FM and KUTX 98.9 FM. The station adopted an all-news and talk format in January 2013 following UT System's acquisition of what became KUTX, which took over the music programming previously broadcast on KUT. News and talk content draws on programming from NPR, the BBC, the Public Radio International, and other sources. HD2 carries the BBC World Service, while HD3 broadcasts TMX.fm. Locally produced programming includes In Black America, a long-running series, and Texas Standard, a statewide news magazine produced in partnership with other Texas public radio stations. The station covers breaking news in Austin, with reporting on topics including education, energy and environment, and local government. KUT also provides coverage of Austin arts and culture. Digital outreach includes web publishing and podcast offerings complementing over-the-air broadcasts.
