A non-commercial community radio station broadcasting at 89.5 FM, licensed to Ashland, Oregon, and serving much of the Rogue Valley including the Medford area and Jackson County. It is owned and operated by the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon (MCASO) and holds FCC designation as a non-commercial educational station. The station is also an affiliate of Pacifica Radio, the nonprofit network known for progressive and community-oriented programming. KSKQ began as a low-power FM (LPFM) station in December 2004, when it received a construction permit and license to operate at 94.9 FM with 100 watts of transmitting power. FCC rules at that power level required 16 of every 24 hours of programming to be locally produced. The station operated on a volunteer basis and represented itself as a liberal but non-partisan community broadcasting project open to participation from a wide range of groups and individuals. In January 2010, plans were announced to upgrade to full-power status, which would require relocating to a new transmitter site on Table Mountain east of Ashland. On June 24, 2011, the low-power 94.9 FM signal ceased operations, and the station relaunched at its current 89.5 FM frequency from the Table Mountain transmitter, covering the bulk of Jackson County. The KSKQ call letters were retained after the Advisory Committee chose not to adopt the previously proposed KORV designation. Programming features an eclectic mix of syndicated public affairs content not available on commercial stations in the region, alongside locally produced music and talk shows.
