Broadcasting at 105.7 MHz, this classic rock station serves the Green Bay and Appleton-Oshkosh areas of northeastern Wisconsin and is owned by Woodward Communications, a media company headquartered in Dubuque, Iowa. The station operates studios on College Avenue with transmitting facilities located near the WGBA Tower west of unincorporated Shirley in the Town of Glenmore in southeastern Brown County. The station's history dates to 1952, when it debuted on 1570 AM as one of the first outlets in the market to target younger audiences with rock and roll programming. The FM signal was added in 1965, initially at around 20,000 watts from a tower on the Zuelke Building in downtown Appleton, later upgraded to 50,000 watts. Through the 1970s the station went through multiple ownership and format changes, briefly operating under the call letters WCXR and adopting a Christian format for eight months in 1977 before returning to album rock and restoring its original call sign. Woodward Communications acquired the FM operation in 1978 and subsequently upgraded the signal to 100,000 watts at 450 feet of antenna height, completing the new facilities in autumn 1979. The station is known locally by the nickname "The Rockin' Apple," a nod to the city it serves. Programming includes locally produced shows alongside classic rock music, with an evening block called Alice's Attic and on-air personalities that have contributed to the station's long tenure as a regional music institution.
