WXK38 is part of NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, an automated 24-hour network of VHF FM weather radio stations operated in the United States by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Each station in the network broadcasts weather information sourced directly from a nearby National Weather Service office, covering local and regional forecasts, climate summaries, zone forecasts, and coastal or lake forecasts as applicable. During hazardous weather events, regular programming is condensed to prioritize hazardous weather outlooks, short-term forecasts, special weather statements, and tropical weather summaries. Beyond meteorological content, the network also carries non-weather emergency broadcasts including Amber alerts, civil emergency messages, evacuation orders, fire notifications, and other hazards distributed through the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System. The network relies on automated broadcast technology that allows individual segments to be recycled across broadcast cycles while ensuring regular updates are pushed to all transmitters. The system originated with the U.S. Weather Bureau in 1960, which began experimental VHF marine weather broadcasts in Chicago and New York City. By the early 1970s, the service had expanded to dozens of cities nationwide under what would become the National Weather Service. Weather radio receivers compatible with the network are sold through consumer electronics retailers, supermarkets, and drugstores across the United States, with particularly strong retail availability in the southern and midwestern regions prone to severe weather.
