A listener-supported, non-commercial public radio station operating on 90.3 MHz, owned by WAMC Northeast Public Radio. Its studios are situated on Central Avenue in Albany, New York, with its transmitter positioned atop Mount Greylock in Adams, Massachusetts. The signal covers the Capital District, eastern New York State, southern Vermont, western Massachusetts, and the Litchfield Hills region of Connecticut. The station is a member of National Public Radio, American Public Media, and Public Radio Exchange, and carries the BBC World Service overnight. Unlike many NPR affiliates that rely predominantly on network content, five to six hours of WAMC's weekday schedule are produced in-house. Programming centers on news and talk, with specialty music shows airing on weekends. The station holds 501(c)(3) charitable status and operates The Linda, a performing arts studio near its main facility in Albany. WAMC signed on in October 1958, originally established by Albany Medical Center and Albany Medical College — the source of its call letters. Its early format was primarily classical music. In 1981 the station separated from the medical institution and became an independent broadcaster. Alan Chartock led the organization for more than four decades before retiring in 2023; Sarah Gilbert subsequently became the station's CEO and president. Dottie Reynolds chairs the board of trustees. The station has built a reputation for substantive local journalism covering upstate New York, Vermont, and western New England.
