The station is licensed not by the FCC or CRTC but by a proclamation from the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs and Clanmothers, making it unique in North America as a broadcaster operating exclusively under Indigenous Nation jurisdiction. Its studios are housed in a building that deliberately straddles the Canada–United States international border, as well as the Quebec–Ontario provincial boundary, serving as a symbol of Mohawk sovereignty and communal unity across political borders. The call sign CKON derives from the Mohawk word "sekon" (also rendered "she:kon"), meaning "hello" in English. The station is reported to operate at 10,000 watts of effective radiated power, with its transmitter on the Canadian side of the Akwesasne territory. Programming covers local news and sports relevant to the Mohawk community and surrounding region.
