Broadcasting since 1922, this station is part of the early history of radio in Uruguay. Experimental transmissions began in April 1922, with regular commercial broadcasting commencing in November of the same year. The station's origins are linked to General Electric's efforts to sell radio receivers, which necessitated the creation of a broadcasting outlet. Early broadcasts included significant events such as the first sports transmission in Uruguay, a minute-by-minute re-narration of a football match between Uruguay and Brazil in October 1922, based on Brazilian radio reports and telegraphs. Throughout the 1920s, the station was part of a burgeoning radio landscape that saw the establishment of several other prominent broadcasters. In 1931, it adopted its current name, having previously operated as Radio Sud América since 1923. The 1930s and 1940s were marked by innovative programming, featuring national cultural figures, informative shows, and controversial sports programs. Notable early sports broadcasts included the first Football World Cup in Montevideo in 1930 and mobile transmissions of the Vuelta Ciclista del Uruguay starting in 1939. The advent of television in 1956 and its subsequent growth in the 1960s and 1970s led to significant changes in radio programming, with an expansion of music and news formats. The mid-1980s, coinciding with the return to democracy, saw a resurgence of journalistic programming. Today, the station continues to operate as a local leader, offering a variety of talk, news, and general programming.
