The station originated as Radio PRCD in the summer of 1997 in Palazzolo Acreide, Sicily, an initiative by Asbesto and Kyuzz. The concept emerged from discussions about internet audio transmission technology, leading to an experimental setup in a basement. This initial studio utilized a mix of vintage and salvaged equipment, including a 1970s Montarbo mixer, a reel-to-reel recorder, and an AMD K5-100 MHz computer running GNU/Linux. Early programming was developed for a community on the IRC channel #cybernet, with content progressively becoming more refined. After Kyuzz's departure to Piedmont, the station's activities in Sicily evolved, with Asbesto continuing to drive the project. This phase saw a shift towards more sporadic, live experimental transmissions, often broadcast from http://radio.dyne.org. The station's unique approach and content have attracted external recognition, including features in magazines and newspapers, television interviews, and even academic theses. The station's current administrative base is in Amsterdam. A core aspect of the station's identity is its embrace of discarded technology and a do-it-yourself philosophy, valuing the process of making functional systems from salvaged components. This ethos is linked to a desire to revive the spirit of 1970s free radio, offering a distinct alternative to mainstream commercial broadcasting. The programming deliberately avoids typical commercial radio elements such as advertising, hit parades, and popular music charts, instead focusing on freedom of speech and experimental content, with new episodes often tied to specific events.
