Originating as a college radio operation in the early 1970s, the station evolved through multiple format changes including smooth jazz before transitioning to alternative music in 2002. The station became a strong supporter of the local independent music scene and produces free concert series in downtown areas. Currently owned by Baltimore Public Media, the station operates with 10,000 watts effective radiated power using HD Radio technology.
