The station traces its history to 1951, when the Tedesco brothers launched WCOW on the AM dial at 1590 kHz in South St. Paul, programming country and old-time music. After transitioning through a female-oriented format under the call letters WISK and moving to 630 kHz, the station was acquired by Crowell-Collier Broadcasting, which brought a California-influenced Top 40 format to Minnesota. Subsequent ownership changes carried the property through multiple hands before the format was eventually transferred to the FM dial.
