Part of NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, an automated 24-hour network of VHF FM weather radio stations operated across the United States by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Each station broadcasts weather information directly from a nearby National Weather Service office. The WWF64 transmitter serves the Monterey Bay and surrounding marine and coastal areas of central California. The network's routine programming cycle includes local and regional weather forecasts, synoptic summaries, climate data, and zone, lake, and coastal waters forecasts. During hazardous weather events the cycle is condensed to prioritize outlooks, short-term forecasts, and special weather statements. The system also broadcasts non-weather emergency alerts sourced from the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System, including Amber alerts, civil emergencies, evacuation orders, and natural disaster notifications. NOAA Weather Radio transmissions use automated broadcast technology that enables consistent updating of forecast segments and recycling of programming elements across transmitters. The network traces its origins to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began experimental VHF marine weather broadcasts in Chicago and New York City. Broadcasts expanded to serve the general public along coastal regions during the 1960s and into the early 1970s. Weather radios capable of receiving these transmissions are sold widely throughout the United States and Canada, with particularly strong retail presence in regions of the Midwest and South prone to severe weather and tornadoes.
