A non-commercial classical music radio station licensed to Newark, New Jersey, serving the greater New York City metropolitan area and northern New Jersey. Operating at 105.9 FM, the station is owned by New York Public Radio (NYPR), a nonprofit organization that also operates WNYC AM, WNYC-FM, and the New Jersey Public Radio group. Studios and offices are located in the Hudson Square neighborhood of lower Manhattan, with the transmitter atop the Empire State Building. The station's lineage extends to an earlier AM station, WQXR, which was commercially operated and long associated with The New York Times as "the radio station of The New York Times." New York Public Radio acquired the WQXR-FM branding on July 14, 2009, through a three-way transaction involving The New York Times Company and Univision Radio, at which point the station transitioned to non-commercial public radio on its current frequency. In addition to the primary classical format, WQXR-FM carries New Sounds Radio on its HD2 subchannel, featuring contemporary classical works by living composers. The streaming-only channel Operavore, dedicated to opera, was also launched as part of the digital programming portfolio. Programming is additionally simulcast on translator station W279AJ at 103.7 FM in Highland, New York, and on WQXW at 90.3 FM in Ossining, New York. Financial support is maintained through three annual on-air pledge drives.
