A public, noncommercial radio station owned by the University of New Orleans, broadcasting a news and information format weekdays with jazz programming on weekends. Studios and offices are located on the fourth floor of the Earl K. Long Library on the university campus on Lakeshore Drive, with the transmitter positioned off Behrman Highway in the Algiers neighborhood. The station also operates a 24-hour classical music service branded as "Classical 104.9 FM" on an FM translator in Metairie, simulcast on KTLN at 90.5 MHz in Thibodaux. HD Radio subchannels carry the classical service on HD2 and jazz on HD3. WWNO signed on February 20, 1972, shortly after the University of New Orleans adopted its current name, having previously been known as Louisiana State University in New Orleans. From its earliest days the station affiliated with NPR, initially transmitting at 5,000 watts before expanding to 50,000 watts by 1980. Weekday NPR programming includes All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Here & Now, and Fresh Air. Weekend offerings feature Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, This American Life, American Routes, and On The Media. Local programming covers New Orleans food culture, community affairs, and Louisiana stories. BBC World Service is broadcast overnight on weeknights. The station maintains a dedicated local news staff focused on New Orleans and Louisiana reporting.
