Part of NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, an automated 24-hour network of VHF FM weather radio stations operated across the United States by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The network traces its origins to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began experimental VHF marine weather broadcasts in Chicago and New York City. Broadcasts expanded to serve the general public along coastal regions during the 1960s and into the early 1970s. Weather radios capable of receiving these transmissions are sold widely throughout the United States and Canada, with particularly strong retail presence in regions of the Midwest and South prone to severe weather and tornadoes.
