A nonprofit community radio station broadcasting at 90,000 watts on 90.1 FM, owned and operated by Mid-Coast Radio Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization. The station is known for its free-form programming philosophy, mixing a wide range of musical genres — including blues, jazz, reggae, rock, hip-hop, alternative, Hispanic, and world music — with public affairs and talk content. Public affairs programming covers topics related to the working class, organized labor, peace and justice movements, LGBTQ+ issues, women's issues, and alternative health. Mid-Coast Radio Project, Inc. was incorporated on March 25, 1977, inspired in part by the 1971 book Sex and Broadcasting. The station received its FCC broadcast license in 1987 and first went on air on February 28, 1988. Its signal covers a roughly circular service area encompassing the Kansas City metropolitan area. The station is affiliated with Pacifica Radio, the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, and the Grassroots Radio Coalition. It serves as the Kansas City metropolitan area's home for Democracy Now!, Pacifica Radio's flagship daily news program. Studios are located on Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri.
