In keeping with the school's team nickname, the station brands itself as "Pirate 1420." The station first signed on in 1980 under the call letters KPAR. Financial difficulties led to a reduction to daytime-only operation in 1986. The current call sign KPIR was adopted in 2002, and the station subsequently returned to round-the-clock broadcasting.
