Urban adult contemporary radio station licensed to Flint, Michigan, and operated by Cumulus Media. Founded in 1979 by Vernon Merritt as Flint's first FM station targeting African-American audiences, the station initially played a mixture of disco and jazz that evolved into mainstream urban contemporary. The call letters are believed to tribute the song "Dazz" by the group Brick, an amalgamation of "disco" and "jazz". The station debuted at number one in the Arbitron ratings in its first full ratings period (Spring 1980) with a share exceeding eleven percent. WDZZ evolved to include hip-hop in 1989 and has programmed various R&B and gospel formats over its decades of operation. The station is licensed for HD Radio broadcast. Current programming includes nationally syndicated shows alongside local content, with various DJs managing weekday and weekend schedules.
