Operating on 790 kHz AM, this outlet is among the oldest radio stations serving the tri-state region encompassing Northwest Kansas, Northeast Colorado, and Southwest Nebraska. Its history traces to the years immediately following World War II, when the Federal Communications Commission granted a license in April 1947; broadcasting commenced on July 14, 1947. The original studio was housed in the basement of the Cooper Hotel in Colby, Kansas, where the station initially identified itself as Ranch and Farm Radio before adopting the Town and Country Radio brand. Nationally recognized personalities among the original staff included John B. Hughes, Johnny Pearson, and Jerry Oppy. In July 1963 the station affiliated with the CBS radio network, extending its national reach during the heyday of network radio affiliation. During the late 1980s it operated within the Kansas-based LS Network, a group of stations assembled by radio entrepreneur Larry Steckline. Currently owned by Kansas Broadcast Company, LLC, the station carries a farm and classic country format and serves as the flagship outlet of the Kansas Farm and Ranch Radio Network. That role reflects its longstanding editorial commitment to agricultural affairs and rural life across the broad geographic footprint it has served for more than seven decades. Programming emphasizes farm news, commodity market reports, and the classic country music that has defined the station identity since its earliest years of operation.
