Radio Free Americana

A non-commercial, listener-supported freeform internet radio station operating from Virginia, presenting an eclectic mix of American roots music and related genres. The station describes its format as spanning "from pure pop for now people to pure slop for cow people; from three chords and the truth to two chords and a sack of lies," positioning itself as non-discriminating freeform radio for the discriminating listener. Freeform radio is a programming philosophy in which the disc jockey exercises wide or total control over music selection, independent of genre boundaries or commercial considerations. The station operates within this tradition, offering a blend of Americana, country, twang, pop, and related sounds without rigid format constraints. The station is entirely volunteer-operated with zero salaries or wages paid to staff. Revenue consists solely of listener donations, which are used primarily to pay artist royalties and maintain the technical infrastructure required for streaming delivery. In the first half of 2025, the station reported a 15% decrease in listener donations alongside a 34% increase in operating expenses compared to the same period the prior year. The station has participated in charitable efforts including relief fundraising for MANNA FoodBank following Hurricane Helene's impact on Asheville, North Carolina.
