The station began its operations on 1 October 1972 under the call letters KBOW-FM, originally serving as the FM counterpart to an established AM station. The current call sign references the regional mining heritage for which the community is historically known. Currently employing the syndicated Custom Rock Hits music format and operating as an affiliate for network news programming, the station remains engaged with community athletics and local programming efforts.
