It operates as a sister station to AM outlet WBLL 1390, and the two form a local radio cluster serving Logan County and the surrounding area of west-central Ohio. The station has a long history in the market, signing on June 1, 1969, under the call letters WGOM — standing for "Ohio's Good Music" — before rebranding as WTOO-FM in 1978 with a contemporary hit format, marketed as "Stereo Too 98." The current WPKO-FM call letters were adopted on February 19, 1988, originally carrying the -FM suffix to distinguish it from the AM counterpart. That suffix has since become optional, and the station is now commonly referred to simply as WPKO.
