Founded in 1953 as a class gift to the university and initially known as WDFM, the station began as an educational experiment in radio communications. Early operations featured progressive music programming that challenged regional commercial radio conventions. Adopted current call letters in 1984 and became a full-fledged NPR member station by 1992. The station operates as a noncommercial educational facility affiliated with the university's public media division. Programming encompasses NPR news, public affairs, and cultural content distributed across 13 counties through FM and HD Radio technologies. A 2022 board decision approved transfer of ownership to a regional public media organization.
