The station operates under the license of the Curators of the University of Missouri System with studios on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. The main broadcast carries news, talk, and information programming, while HD Radio subchannels deliver specialized formats including jazz and classical music. The station signed on air in 1972 with a fine arts and news format. It achieved several broadcasting firsts for the region, including being the first to broadcast music from compact discs in 1983 and the first to air Ambisonic programs in the United States in 1984. By 1992, the station had increased its transmitter power to 100,000 watts, and in 1995 transitioned to its current all-news and talk format supplemented by specialty programming on weekend evenings. HD Radio technology was implemented in 2006, introducing digital subchannels for jazz, world music, and classical content.
