The 1980s brought further changes: a shift to top 40 in 1980 under the "Z93" brand, followed by a return to the KZOZ call letters in 1986. The station changed hands multiple times, eventually passing to Anthony Brandon and L. Rogers Brandon in 1989, whose company later became American General Media. In October 1991, the station permanently adopted a classic rock format, dropping the Z93 branding. Programming adjustments in 2003 introduced a more active-rock lean alongside the classic catalog.
