A public radio station owned and operated by the University of Utah, broadcasting at 90.1 MHz from its studios in the Eccles Broadcast Center on the university campus. Its main transmitter is located on Farnsworth Peak, with an extensive network of rebroadcast transmitters extending its signal across much of Utah. The station first went on air on June 5, 1960, as an educational broadcaster with an emphasis on classical music. By 1962 it had expanded its reach by relocating its transmitter to Mount Vision in the Oquirrh Mountains. Through the 1970s and 1980s the station evolved significantly alongside the growth of NPR, adopting a hybrid format that combined daytime classical programming with evening jazz, each bloc featuring long-running on-air personalities. In 1993, the station moved from its original home in the historic Kingsbury Hall to the newly constructed Eccles Broadcast Center. Competition intensified through the 1990s as KBYU-FM drew away classical listeners and KCPW challenged its NPR talk audience. In response to declining ratings, classical music was removed from the schedule in 2001, prompting listener protest but no significant reduction in financial support. That same period saw the creation of RadioWest, a locally produced program examining news and issues relevant to Utah and the broader American West. The remaining nightly jazz programming was phased out in 2015, completing the station's transformation into an all-news and talk format. Today the station carries NPR and other public radio network programming alongside original local journalism covering Utah politics, environmental issues, and regional affairs.
