A listener-supported, noncommercial radio station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, carrying an Adult Album Alternative (AAA) format. Operated by the Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation alongside 90.5 WESA, studios and offices are located on Bedford Square at South 12th Street. The station transmits at an effective radiated power of 18,000 watts from a tower on Longview Street. The station began broadcasting on April 30, 1974, on 91.5 MHz, originating from the South Oakland area in a former police horse stable at 4 Cable Place. Before securing its own frequency, the Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation — incorporated in 1972 specifically to build a community-based noncommercial station — produced music and public affairs programs under an arrangement with WDUQ 90.5. Early operations were almost entirely volunteer-driven. In 1979 the station applied to move to 91.3 MHz and upgrade its signal to 18 kilowatts, with the transition completed by 1983 after relocating transmission facilities from the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning to a tower above the Monongahela River near Hazelwood. Subsequent facility moves brought the station to Chatham University in 1987, to Birmingham Place on the South Side in 1994, and to the current WYEP Community Broadcast Center on Bedford Square in 2006. Programming emphasizes independent and emerging artists through formats including live in-studio sessions and artist spotlight series.
