Originally a commercial AM station licensed to Mount Vernon, Ohio, WMVO operated at 1300 kHz under the brand "Oldies WMVO" with an oldies-oriented format supplemented by talk and sports programming. The station was co-founded by Helen E. Zelkowitz in 1951 and remained locally owned until 1994, building a strong community identity through on-air personalities who became fixtures in Knox County public life. Ron Staats, known as "The Voice of Knox County," served as operations manager, program director, and hosted the talk program Radioline for 37 years. Personalities Dave "Skip" Bevington and Charlie Kilkenny were also long-tenured voices at the station. WMVO held sports affiliations with the Cleveland Guardians, Cleveland Cavaliers, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets, and maintained an ABC News Radio affiliation. The station and its FM sister WQIO passed through several ownership groups including Ashland Broadcasting, Ohio Radio Group, and Clear Channel Communications before landing with BAS Broadcasting of Fremont, Ohio.
